How to Fish Save Location — Cloud Saves and Manual Transfer

Steam Cloud is not listed; Patch 1.0.6 autosaves every minute and saves from the Save, Main Menu, and Quit buttons, while crashes no longer write a new save.

How to Fish does not currently list Steam Cloud, so moving progress between Windows and Proton devices may require a manual copy of the Saves folder. Before any transfer, close the game on both devices and back up both the source and destination folders.

What Patch 1.0.6 changed

Official Patch 1.0.6 says the game now checks a save before loading it, which prevents false servers named “Game Name” from appearing. A crash no longer writes a new local or server save. Normal saving still occurs once per minute and when the player presses Save, Main Menu, or Quit.

Before copying a save, use one of those buttons, wait for the action to finish, and close the game normally. If the application has just crashed, do not assume the folder contains the last action taken before the crash.

Patch 1.0.9 says the developer added another fix intended to prevent corrupted save files. Update before attempting recovery, but preserve the original folder first: a patch note saying “hopefully fixed” is not a guarantee that every previously damaged file can be repaired.

Reported Windows save location

C:\Users\<your-user>\AppData\LocalLow\Dazed Games\How to Fish\Saves\

AppData is normally hidden. Open the user's profile folder with hidden items visible, then follow LocalLow, Dazed Games, How to Fish, and Saves. The path is community-reported rather than developer-documented, so confirm that the files change after a new save before replacing anything.

Reported Steam Deck, Bazzite, or Proton location

The confirmed report came from Bazzite. Steam Deck also uses Proton for this Windows game, but its Steam library prefix can differ depending on internal storage, microSD use and library configuration. Search inside the compatdata/4001890 prefix rather than copying the reporter's mount point literally.

Safe manual-transfer checklist

1. Exit How to Fish completely on both devices.
2. Copy the source Saves folder to a dated backup.
3. Copy the destination Saves folder to a different dated backup.
4. Transfer the source contents into the destination folder.
5. Start the game and verify the expected island, gear and objective.
6. If progress is wrong, close the game and restore the destination backup.

Because Steam Cloud is not currently listed, do not assume Steam will reconcile two different saves. Keep the original backup until the destination has loaded the correct island, equipment, and active objective.
