Couch campaign co-op is two players; online campaign co-op supports up to four, while multiplayer modes use separate player limits.
The Gears of War: E-Day campaign can be played solo, with two players in local split screen, or with up to four players online. Four-player online campaign support does not mean four people can share one screen.
That distinction is separate from competitive and Horde limits. Horde Siege supports 12 players, 4v4 Versus uses eight players, and Combat Training supports four-player cooperative practice. A store label such as “online multiplayer” therefore does not answer the campaign question by itself.
Xbox documents the campaign and local co-op on the product page. The current pages do not establish cross-platform campaign play with PlayStation because no PlayStation edition is announced. For PC-to-Xbox group compatibility, use the platform and account behavior documented at launch rather than assuming every mode shares one pool simply because Xbox Play Anywhere is supported.
If your purchase depends on couch play, plan for two controllers and a two-player campaign session. If your group has three or four people, each additional player needs an online setup rather than another local split.
