What to know before you play

Wild Blue Skies official Steam artwork

For a first Wild Blue Skies walkthrough, complete Jill's Training Mode, finish one campaign path without chasing every secret, then replay Archipelago and follow Thorne through the waterfalls to enter a harder branch. The game is available on Windows PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. Score ribbons and W-I-L-D medals are separate goals: Steam's public achievements define a ribbon as a mission high-score reward and a medal as the reward for collecting W-I-L-D during a mission.

Steam lists Steam Cloud and a public set of 22 achievements; Xbox lists cloud saves and Xbox achievements; PlayStation lists Remote Play and PS5 accessibility features. The four Blue Bombers are campaign characters, not evidence of co-op; all three official storefronts describe a single-player game.

First-run walkthrough

  1. Complete Jill's Training Mode. It teaches the control vocabulary and unlocks the public “Locked and Loaded!” achievement. If aiming feels too loose or too slow, change movement sensitivity before starting a score attempt.
  2. Treat survival as the first objective. Learn normal fire, charged targeting, bomb use, boost, brake, and roll timing. A first clear gives you a route baseline; a failed high-score chase gives you little comparable evidence.
  3. Keep one run readable. Note each mission name and which destination appears next. Do not change pilot, upgrade priorities, and suspected route triggers simultaneously.
  4. Use the Archipelago branch on replay. Follow Thorne through the waterfall sequence. Multiple current player reports describe this as the opening harder-route trigger, making it the strongest public branch instruction available now.
  5. Separate completion from collectibles. Finish the mission first, then return for its ribbon or W-I-L-D medal. The achievement definitions show that those two awards use different conditions.
  6. Protect wingmen when testing the final route. One achievement requires defeating Grimclaw without an ally falling during a mission. Community reports also warn that ally-loss state may complicate repeat attempts, so preserve a clean comparison save before completion hunting.

Alternate-route trigger checklist

The current player-reported candidates are: follow Thorne through the Archipelago waterfalls; destroy all falling rocks in Canyons; defeat the enemy squad before the bomb timer expires in Mines; destroy all walkers before they reach the Temple; destroy the purple crystals in Grotto; and hit the boss weak point every time it appears in Cloudtop.

Only Archipelago currently has useful independent corroboration in the sources checked. The other five are actionable community candidates, not developer-published conditions. Hurricane remains unresolved: the available discussion could not separate collecting all four W-I-L-D letters from reaching a high score, because the player did both in the same run.

Use the full Wild Blue Skies alternate-route guide for confidence labels, retest steps, and the unresolved Hurricane condition.

Ribbons, W-I-L-D medals, and completion order

Steam's achievement descriptions give the clearest public distinction:

  • Ribbon: reach the high-score requirement on a mission.
  • Medal: collect the four W-I-L-D letters during a mission.
  • Distinguished: obtain ribbons in every mission.
  • Decorated: obtain medals in every mission.
  • Ace Pilot: obtain both medals and ribbons in every mission.

This means a different route is not automatically a better score, and a high score is not proof that you collected W-I-L-D. Track route, score, ribbon, and medal in separate columns. If one mission is blocking completion, replay it for one missing condition instead of trying to change the branch and earn both awards at once.

Is Wild Blue Skies worth buying?

The current Steam review endpoint reported 232 all-language reviews: 137 positive and 95 negative on August 22, a Mixed result. Positive reports commonly value the responsive on-rails shooting, alternate paths, visual style, and high-score replay loop. Critical reports repeatedly mention the close resemblance to Star Fox 64, unclear branch triggers, control preferences, and short individual stages.

That makes the game a better fit if you want a compact arcade campaign designed for route replay, medal collection, and score improvement. It is a weaker fit if you expect a long linear story campaign, multiplayer, or every alternate-path condition to be clearly explained in-game. This is an evidence-based purchase boundary, not a hands-on review or a site-assigned score.

Current evidence boundary

Official sources establish the release date, $14.99 US price, Windows/PS5/Xbox Series availability, single-player mode, controller features, achievement descriptions, pilots, upgrades, secrets, and branching structure. Specific route triggers come from current player reports and remain labeled by confidence until they can be reproduced or documented by the developer.
