FAST ANSWER

Start with Simplified Jet Controls and a jet-only Portal experience, then learn throttle, afterburner, camera, flares, weapons, and low-altitude lock breaking.

Use a jet-only Portal experience to practice, turn on Simplified Jet Controls if manual pitch, roll, and yaw are overwhelming, and learn one loop first: throttle up, use afterburner for takeoff, make small turns, level out, then land or repeat. EA added the simplified scheme in Season 4 Update 1.4.2.0.

Default jet controls

ActionKeyboard and mousePS5 / Xbox controller
Throttle up / downW / SLeft stick up / down
Pitch up / downUp Arrow / Down Arrow, or mouse inputRight stick down / up
Yaw left / rightA / DLeft stick left / right
Roll left / rightLeft Arrow / Right Arrow, or mouse inputRight stick left / right

Zoom / aimRight mouseL2 / LT
FireLeft mouseR2 / RT
Switch weaponF or mouse wheel upTriangle / Y

Inputs can be remapped. If pitch feels backward, change the pitch inversion setting instead of relearning an uncomfortable default.

A short practice routine

  1. Choose a jet-only Portal experience so a crash does not consume a live team's scarce aircraft slot.
  2. Enable Simplified Jet Controls for the first session. Looking left, right, up, or down will align the jet without separate manual yaw and roll inputs.
  3. Hold throttle up and tap afterburner to take off. Once airborne, make small inputs; overcorrecting is the fastest route into the ground.
  4. Stay a few hundred meters above terrain while learning orientation. Use third-person view to see threats and first-person or zoom for weapon alignment.
  5. Practice one wide turn, level the wings, and regain speed before trying another maneuver.
  6. Add flares last. EA recommends waiting for the incoming-projectile warning instead of firing them as soon as a lock begins.

Break a lock without wasting flares

Flares are limited. The official flight manual gives two additional defensive ideas: place a solid object such as terrain or a building between the jet and the threat, or fly below 30 meters so enemy lock systems cannot maintain the lock. Low flight reduces lock exposure but increases crash risk, so practice it after basic control is stable.

The two Season 4 cooperative jets—the F-74A Seacat and F/A-81F Super Spectre—also have a WSO seat. On default controller inputs, Cross / A switches seats when the other seat is empty; on PC the official table lists F1 / F2. Tell a human WSO before a hard maneuver because abrupt turns can break their aim.

QUICK ANSWERS

Questions players ask next

How do you practice flying in Battlefield 6?

EA recommends jet-only experiences in Portal for practice. Start with Simplified Jet Controls, stay airborne before adding combat inputs, and move to live-fire playlists after the controls are repeatable.

How do you enable Simplified Jet Controls?

Open the control settings and choose Simplified Jet Controls. In that mode, looking in a direction automatically combines pitch, roll, and yaw to align the jet.

What is the afterburner button in Battlefield 6?

The official default is Left Shift on keyboard and mouse or pressing the left stick, L3, on a controller.

When should you use jet flares?

Wait until an incoming projectile is indicated rather than spending flares at the first lock warning.
